Training - The Natural Way
The communication between horse and rider is the cornerstone of success with any equestrian, a language based upon movement rather than force, silence instead of words, training instead of breaking. Since most horses I know don't speak English, I must use my body language as the means in which I communicate. This is the basis of my training philosophy. The sign of a well trained horse is one which doesn't need commands or attacks, but moves based upon our movement. It is often believed that an appropriate method of training is trying to show a horse what you want done, then punishing it until it understands. The horse only sees this as a threat, however, and you end up with an animal who now knows a series of random tasks rather than something more systematic. Horses respond to where your body is according to their Primary and Secondary lines. Once a trainer, rider, student, or anyone wishing to communicate freely with their horse, understands this a strong bond is formed. With this tool, horses can dance with their human with nothing holding them together but themselves.
Using mental power is more effective then using physical strength. Teaching a horse that when a rider is in a certain position, they should be in a certain position, is a form of silent communication which encourages the horse to think based on it's own style of logic and results in superior performance. Dr. Ron Meredith of Meredith Manor (President and Founder), has taken his 60 plus years of horse training and developed a system of training known as "Heeding". To heed is to pay attention, Dr. Meredith always said. That is simply what we want our horses to do, to pay attention to what we are asking. Heeding uses methodically applied pressures to create shapes that the horse can understand. Through this method of training, a horse and rider can be one in whatever task they're performing and achieve greater results.
